The pop star claimed recording her fourth LP was healing and got rid of her demons

At the tender age of 20 years old, it may come as a surprise to some that Demi Lovato speaks about getting rid of her demons and being healed by her music – but that’s exactly what her fourth album has helped her do.

The pop star has spoken about her new LP, simply called Demi, and said she found writing the songs for it to be “very therapeutic”.

The X Factor USA judge shot to fame at the age of 16 when she appeared in the movie Camp Rock and that same year was signed to Hollywood Records and released her first album.

Three years ago she spent time in rehab after she revealed that she suffered from bulimia, self-harming and was “self-medicating” with drugs and alcohol.

But she came through it and her career is now going from strength to strength, and she says she has her fourth album to thank for making her feel better and more positive.

”My life has changed so much. I am vulnerable and honest in this record, the way I’ve always wanted to be. I was ready to come out of the darkness,” she told Repubblica.it

”Writing this album was therapeutic, it helped me get rid of my demons. I am a warrior now – I’ve been through so much in the past years, it was hard to find the courage to get out of it and write about it, I was afraid no one would understand my message.”

Demi also admitted that being a child star left her confused about her future and made her fall prey to “temptations” such as alcohol and drugs.

”I spent so much time trying to figure out what the right thing to do was, that I got distracted along the way by fun and temptations and that’s why I ended up in rehab at 18.”

Her fourth album was released last month and debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 and upon its release, she issued a statement that said: “I’m incredibly proud of this album. It’s better than anything I have ever done!

“I experimented with a variety of different sounds and poured my heart into writing these songs. I’m so excited for everyone to finally get the chance to hear them!”

Demi Lovato: Mom hates my tattoos

X Factor's Topshop Photo Call With Demi Lovato & 5th Harmony

Demi Lovato’s mother didn’t talk to her for “a day or so” when she got her large forearm tattoo.

Demi Lovato got into such a huge fight with her mother over her arm tattoo she had to walk out.

The American star has around 12 inkings on her body, some of which she regrets. Last year she claimed she might get some removed when she is older, but that hasn’t stopped the 20-year-old singer adding to her collection.

In November she had 12 birds tattooed on her lower right arm by Kat Von D, something her mother was horrified about when she first saw it.

”Um, more like a day or so,” Demi told Heat magazine, when asked how long they didn’t talk for. “I went over to my mom’s and I had it bandaged up, which probably made it look bigger than it was, so she just thought I’d got a half sleeve or something! She didn’t react well and I ended up leaving. It was pretty bad.”

Demi sees permanent inkings as an art form, but no matter how hard she tries, her mother Dianna won’t see her point of view. That said, Dianna doesn’t mind quite so much when her daughter brands herself discreetly. The star’s father Patrick also disapproves, but tackles his feelings in a different way.

“My mom and I got into a huge fight when I got the birds on my arms, just because she has a different perception of tattoos than my generation does,” Demi explained. “And so it’s hard to explain to her that it’s like art for your skin and you don’t have to draw it on every day. It’s something that’s meaningful. My mom and dad get so mad! When it’s littler ones, my mom doesn’t mind so much, but we got into a huge fight over this.

“My dad still, to this day, has not mentioned anything about my tattoo, which is pretty funny.”

Demi enjoyed a great deal of success last year, appearing on the panel of the US X Factor. Simon Cowell is her co-judge and was thrilled with how well she did in her first season, so she is coming back for another round of shows.

The young star gets on well with the music mogul, with the pair teasing each other regularly. Although they are close, there are some things Demi draws the line at.

“At least $50 million,” she replied, when asked how much it would take for her to get a tattoo of Simon’s face. “Yeah, $50 million or $100 million.”

DEMI LOVATO ON LOSING TOUCH WITH NIALL HORAN AND GETTING ABUSE FROM ONE DIRECTION FANS: ‘IT’S HARD TO MAINTAIN A FRIENDSHIP’

Remember when a possible romance between Demi Lovato and One Direction blonde bombshell Niall Horan was all anybody could talk about?

While some proclaimed their love of ‘Nemi’ from the metaphorical rooftops of twitter, others moaned in despair when it was revealed that the pair had been skyping, before dining at The Pink Taco (still sounds dirty, doesn’t it?).

Lately though, things have been rather quiet on the Nemi front, and it seems that those still hoping for a Lovato-Horan coupling could be sadly disappointed, after Demi revealed that the hype surrounding her friendship with the 1D chicken eater all became a bit too much.

Asked by heat magazine if she’s still in touch with Nialler, Demi said: “Not really. Unfortunately, as sweet as he is, it’s hard to maintain a friendship with somebody that you really can’t hang out with without people automatically assuming that you’re dating.”

OH BUT DEMI YOU SHOWED HIM THE PINK TACO. DOES THAT MEAN NOTHING ANYMORE?

Speaking about the inevitable abuse from the more extreme Directioners out there, Dems also revealed that she’s no stranger to the odd jealous fan – after experiencing a similar situation when she dated Joe Jonas for five months back in 2010.

“People tweeted and either said really nice things or rude things,” she said of the whole Nemi era. “More nice than bad, i guess – but I dealt with that already with the Jonas Brothers, with being so close to them and then dating Joe.

“I’d already been through that, so it wasn’t a big deal.”

Demi Lovato is not one to shy away from speaking the truth. In a new interview with ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine, the singer opens up about her experience in rehab, her suicide contract, and wanting to be just like Rihanna.

Demi Lovato often speaks candidly about her stint in rehab and struggles with bipolar disorder, bulimia and cutting. But news that Demi looked up to another famous celebrity – Rihanna – was a bit surprising!

Demi Lovato Signs Suicide Contract — ‘Rolling Stone’ Magazine Interview

Demi also told Rolling Stone magazine that she was suicidal at the age of seven, and was even forced to sign a suicide contract! “The principal called my parents and made me sign this suicide contract saying that I would not kill myself. They weren’t expecting that so young,” the star told the mag.

Demi Lovato Realized Rihanna Wasn’t A Good Role Model For Her

When Demi released her third album, Unbroken, it was met with mixed reviews. Some people complained about the hip-hop that seemed to be interwoven in some of the songs and were confused by how different her new music was. Now, we know why! In an excerpt from the interview with Rolling Stone, she told the magazine, “I wanted to be like Rihanna. But I had to learn that wasn’t me.”

New Album ‘Demi’ Released to Rave Reviews

Demi definitely learned from her past mistakes. When her fourth album, Demi, was released on May 14, 2013, it was clear that it was written and inspired by her own experiences. The album was much more well received and you could tell how personal all of the music was to her, a far cry from when the star was trying to be someone else.

[EXCLUSIVE] Interview of Demi – The Sun

anos 60

DEMI LOVATO looks me up and down and says: “I like your outfit. It’s cute.”

The pop star is curled up on a sofa in a darkened hotel room — looking jetlagged and not at all in the mood for a chat.

But as the 20-year-old X Factor USA judge has been famously open about her past eating disorders, drug abuse and self-harm, I am still hoping for a good natter.

Feeling chuffed at her compliment, I plonk myself down and tell her that my clothes are from Primark.

She stares blankly at me and says: “I don’t know what that is.”

I explain that it is a British chain that sells cheap fashion.

Demi looks horrified — as if I had just told her that I found my get-up while rootling through a skip.

But that didn’t stop her telling all about Simon Cowell’s non-stop grooming, her own confessional new album, Demi, and “bonding” with fellow X Factor judge Britney Spears.

Are there any surprises on the new album?

I think my fans know everything about me! But there are some songs that are more personal than I’ve ever been.

Warrior is a song that’s super-personal but I’m not going to elaborate on that. I feel like if you want to know what it’s about you can listen to the song! But I definitely do get more open and vulnerable.

What was it like working with Simon Cowell?

Working with him is really great. He’s a really, really cool guy, not what people expect, I think. He’s not as mean as he comes across.

Are you close?

Definitely. I’ve been able to tell him things that I don’t tell the public — about my personal experiences, my journey and what I’ve been through. He’s been really, really cool about everything. Way deep down there, he’s a good guy.

But on the surface…

Well, it’s Simon Cowell! What do you think?

Does he tease you guys?

He teases us for sure. Just watch the show. You’ll see, he’s constantly teasing me.

Is Simon as vain as people make him out to be?

Definitely! He wears his sunglasses indoors. It’s funny. It’s a part of who he is.

Is he big into grooming?

Yeah, he’s always blowdrying his hair.

What was Britney Spears like to work with?

She was really great and super down-to-Earth. I’m going to miss her this season.

You have a bit in common, both being child stars who have run into difficulties. Did you ever have a heart-to-heart?

We’ve definitely bonded, I think because we’ve been through the same stuff. But if we did have a heart-to-heart I probably wouldn’t tell a magazine about it! It’s pretty obvious that we’ve been through some of the same things for sure.

Do you keep in touch?

We have kept in touch. Our moms have become super-close, which is really random. It’s super-funny.

What made you decide to be so open with problems in private life in the past?

I went through bullying and it was a very difficult time for me. It ended up changing my life and I went through a lot of things because of that.

When you’re bullied by someone, it doesn’t mean that you have to be thrown in a trashcan by the big bully at school or that somebody physically hurt you or something.

There’s verbal harassment, which is sometimes even worse.

Who is your favourite British person?

I really like Adele.

What would you do if you weren’t a singer?

A songwriter!

And if it was outside the music business?

I’m fascinated with criminal psychology and things like that. I’d probably go to law school.

How many tattoos do you have?

A bunch. I lost count.

Do you have a favourite?

I have one on my back that says “Now I’m a warrior” that I got really recently. It’s a quote from one of my songs.

When did you start writing?

The first song I wrote was when I was eight — and it wasn’t good by any means.

But it was OK. I think it was about getting butterflies in your stomach over a guy that you liked.

That’s quite young to be writing songs…

I’ve always been an old soul, I guess.

Where do you take your inspiration from?

I hadn’t been in a relationship when I was eight years old so it was hard to sing about something I hadn’t really experienced!

But now I’m older and because I’ve been through everything you can name, I’ve been able to draw from personal experiences.

What is your new single, Heart Attack, about?

Heart Attack is the feeling you get when you’re about to fall in love.

Heart attack is like, “Oh no, I’m about to fall in love and I’m not used to that. I’m used to manipulating and abusing guys and being a game-player — and now being I’m feeling something serious coming on and I don’t know how to handle it”.

Is that from personal experience?

I don’t sing about stuff that’s not from personal experience any more.
